Updates 29th September 2015

Hi Parents,

I have some updates on today's work.

English: I shared some pictures of things found on a beach, especially with plastic litter. I also showed them the video (very short part) of the turtle who had plastic straw stuck in its nostril. These caused the boys to understand the reasons why littering in the beach area is not a good idea. You can ask them how they can contribute. When they have a beach outing next time, you can reiterate the lesson and they will help keep the beach clean. We have done a SBA writing on this. It is supposed to be an independent writing. I gave them some points to write about. (Pls see whatsapp pic attached)

English: I could not do the activity with the telescope because of the high PSI index. I have collected some of the telescopes and kept it safely so that we can do the activity when there is less haze.

English: We read the book 'Lazy Duck' in class today. We have learnt the key vocabulary in the book and completed Page 2 and 3 of the booklet.

Maths:We are doing 'Addition within 100' now. We have done a few pages of the workbook. I have given them homework to complete. Please do Page 152 to 156 at home. We will continue with the Addition lesson once they are back.

Maths class test on Numbers to 100. I have returned Chapter 17 yesterday. Kindly revise with them so I can test them in class. The test will be conducted either on Thursday or Friday (depending on haze situation).

Haze matters:
I have returned some materials for the boys to keep in hand just in case there is school closure.
1) Lazy Duck booklet
2) SBA book
3) Oral Practice booklet
4) Maths Workbook

Other matters:
1) The Caring teacher awards 2016: Nominations for Caring teachers awards is open for the boys and parents. If you wish to nominate anyone, you can take the form from me. I would need to print and pass the form to you. So please let me know if you need the form. (Pls see whatsapp photo attached)

Updates on Haze matters

Dear Parents,

There is no E-learning work for today. Please allow your son to revise for the Writing Test on Monday. The marks for the test will be included in their final marks, so I would appreciate if you can guide them at home. They can use the SBA book, Writing Package Term 3, and Writing practice 3 to prepare for the test. Unfortunately, I could not return their last composition due to the closure of school.

For now, the test on Monday will still carry on if there is no school closure on  Monday. If there is school closure, the test will be postponed and the pupils will be informed of the changes.

Lastly, please keep yourself available for last minute updates as I would need 100% acknowledgement for some announcements. I will let you know which of the announcements need a response. Thanks and hope the haze situation clears soon.

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 28th August 2015

Dear Parents,

Here are some updates for this week.

1) We have done the Writing booklet (Term 3) which includes focus on adjectives and writing a composition based on 4 pictures. I have given them feedback about their writing and would like you to read it as well. Please help them with construction of sentences and writing out a story at home, using these materials. On top of that, I have typed out model compositions for them to look at. These are taken from their classmates who have done really well. There is a page on SBA book that focuses on Introductions. Please take a look at it and guide them to write good introductions. There is a English Individual Writing test on Monday, which has no weighting. Please ensure they are prepared for it.

2) We have completed the topic of Division this week. I have returned he division test paper but I will only be going through the paper on Monday. Please sign and return on Monday. Please place all their worksheets into the respective files. I will be collecting all the files on Wednesday so I can check them over the holidays.

3) I shared a video for them to memorise the times table. This is quite interactive and the boys loved it a lot.

https://www.youtube.com/user/laughalongandlearn

4) We have been doing Art for the past two days as we had a lot of academic work to complete prior to that. We have learnt about primary and secondary colours. We used our oil pastel crayons to blend the colours. Today we continued learning about warm and cool colours. We have coloured these warm and cool colours in our sketch books. There is a task that we will be working on and will have to get prepared by end of September. We need to create a magical garden with these techniques and colours learnt during Art lesson. I will surely be sourcing out for some ideas before we begin on this project. Please allow your son to bring along a spare t-shirt for him to pull over his uniform so we can work with the crayons and paint in the next few lessons. I have shared some of these photos in whatsapp.

5) Teachers' day is around the corner and thus we will be having a school holiday on Friday, 4th September. Thursday will be a short day, so please ensure that they have a heavy breakfast and pick them up at 10am. Please read the letter from Mr Goh regarding the celebrations.

6) Badminton enrichment lessons letter has been given out. Please sign up for it if you are interested.

Thanks and have a great weekend.

Regards,
Mrs Chopra

Updates 19th August 2015

Hi Parents,

1) I have marked, gone through and returned the Test on Multiplication. Please kindly sign it and file it into the tests file. I will mark all the corrections in the files when I collect them.

2) There is English Holiday homework. The format of the paper will be similar to the Mini-test next Wednesday. Kindly complete the worksheet and submit on Monday. I will mark and go through the paper before their Mini-test.

3) Beginner chess course letter given. Those who are interested to take part, please sign up for it and submit to me on Monday.

4) Please revise for English Mini-Test on Wednesday, 26th August.

5) Please check that your son has filed in his own work in his files. Simon's STELLAR booklet is missing from his file. Kindly check that it is not filed in the wrong person's file.

6) Please bring the Writing booklet, English homework, SBA book on Monday.

7) I have gone through the writing booklet with the boys in detail.

Some feedback that I would like to highlight so you can also help them at home.

- 1 idea per sentence. Our boys have tendency to write long sentences with too many ideas
(E.g. It was a hot day and Harry was walking home after school and he was too tired and wanted to have a good lunch. Instead of making long sentences and along with it, lot of mistakes, it is encouraged that they focus on one idea per sentence. It was a hot day. Harry was walking home after school. He was too tired. He was looking forward to a good lunch.)

- There should be 4 paragraphs and each new paragraph must be written on a new line, along with 2 fingers spacing.

- There should be at least 4-6 sentences per picture for them to get better content marks. They should check their work thoroughly as the more they write, the higher the chances of making spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors.

- Helping words should all be used. It will help to keep them on track and allow for better content marks.

- The story must be written in past tense.

- Checklist is a good way to ensure they are still on track. Pupils must be encouraged to check their work against the checklist. Please take note that the checklist will not be given during the Individual writing assessment.

- Finally, please ensure they do their corrections. Please do not erase their original work. If there is no space in the booklet, they can write it on a piece of paper and attach it to the composition.

I will be collecting the booklet on Monday.

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 18th August 2015

Dear Parents,

Please take note of the following.

1) I have returned their Maths files with all the worksheets till Graph. Please put in the multiplication worksheets inside their Maths Files.

2) I have returned the Maths Mini-Test 2. Please sign the paper. The paper is inside their Maths Test file.

3) I have returned their English worksheet file. They should have the following items in it.
   - Poggy Frog and the Cows booklet (Please sign and complete corrections)
   - The Giant's Ice-cream (Please sign and complete corrections)
   - Poetry Slam booklet
   - Comprehension booklet (Please sign and complete corrections)

Please use the English file to prepare for the English Mini-test.

4) I have returned the SBA book as well. Please sign every page and revise for the test.

5) English individual writing test is of no weighting this term. We are currently in process of completing the writing exercises in class. I would need some extra time to guide the boys with the writing as they are still weak in sentence construction and composition writing. Kindly bear with me on this. Their SBA books are good examples of writing work done in class. At the same time, you can use their semester 1 booklets to look at sequencing and writing (4 pictures), to prep them whenever there is time.

Since they are having a long weekend (Thursday to Sunday), kindly use this break to revise for the upcoming tests. Please clear their bags of all files, SBA books so that it will not be too heavy.

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 10th July 2015

Dear Parents,

We had a successful Green week with the entire collection of recycled paper crossing 7000kg. I have sent you some photos of the class efforts as well. I would like to thank the parents who went an extra mile to send the paper to school and for being supportive of the school's efforts in recycling.

Maths matters: I have covered "Addition of 3 numbers" today as well as "Word problems". There are few strategies to do the addition. One is to make groups of 10 and count. Another way is to count on. However, each child has his strengths and comforts. So they can use either one to complete the addition of 3 numbers. The other part I covered is 'Word problems'. Please ensure that 3 parts of the answers are written.

1) Number equation
2) Working
3) Final answer

I have sent you an example of a good work and my answer key as well. You can refer to it while teaching your son.

They need to complete Page 29 to 32 of Chapter 11 booklet as homework. Please also sign Page 28 of the booklet. Please take note of the comments and mistakes that he has made so that he can improve on his work.

Please also sign Maths non-routine questions worksheet.

There will be a Spelling test on Monday.

We did another session of Outdoor Education today. The boys went out to draw the maps of the field and the canteen, to show the importance of landmarks and orientation of maps.

One last request: The class has voted to decorate the classroom for the upcoming National day celebrations. I would like to make the classroom and the lockers look appealing and colourful. So I need your help to print and bring in writeups or pictures that are about Singapore.

Some suggestions:
- significant locations in Singapore (landmarks, attractions)
- symbols (Merlion, Parliament House, National Flag)
- Writeups of Historical Events

Thanks and hope to see some great work from the boys.

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

http://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_Index.html

We revisited the usage of commas as a punctuation mark yesterday. We have already learnt the use of commas last semester. It was supposed to be a revision exercise. Most of them could still remember the concept.

Hi Parents,

I have collected the following items from your son today: health check forms, Leader in Me activity book and Spelling booklet.

We have an extensive discussion on Frogs and Toads, to tie  in with the theme of the book. They have learnt a lot about different types of frogs and toads today. They also know the life cycle of a frog and toad as well.

We had a great day in school and hope you have a good evening!

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Wednesday, 1 July 2015

Updates 1st July 2015

Hi Parents,

We had a great Learning Journey to the Science Centre today. The boys learnt a lot about frogs and toads during the lesson. You can ask them to share their experience looking closely at a live frog, its body parts particularly the nostrils, ears, eyes, webbed feet, digits in the front and hind limbs. We also learnt about poisonous frogs and how to identify them. Pupils know how to identify a toad and a frog and tell them apart based on the physical characters. We also learnt about the life cycle of a frog and made a tadpole toy. I hope your son has shown these to you. I will be sharing the pictures with you shortly.

Due to the fact that we did not have any class time, I could not collect any forms from them. Please forgive me for that and I will follow up on the papers tomorrow when I meet them in class.

We had a CCA briefing today. Your son should have gone for the meeting and should be able to give more details about the respective CCAs. Any clarifications, please do email me and I will forward it to the respective teacher in charge.

Due to some requests, I have decided to postpone the Maths Test on 'Numbers to 40' to Monday so that you can revise with your son over the weekend.

Thanks and have a great evening.

Regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

I will be giving them a contents page for the two files. I can't print it out now because the printing room is used solely for the printing of exam papers. I will update the blog with the items. Please check that your son has all the papers. There will be a file check soon, after their test is over.

2) I have also returned the Ordinal Numbers Test paper and Combined Test 2. Please sign these papers and file into the Tests file.

3) There is no spelling next week.

4)  I have not been able to complete the Show and Tell due to time constraints in the suspended timetable. I will continue testing them tomorrow.

Updates 27th April 2015

Hi Parents,

1) Kindly get your son ready for Show and Tell. There were a few who did their Show and Tell today. Some common feedback: They have to increase their volume while presenting in front of the class. This would be the only time I allow the presenter to 'shout' in class so that they can be heard by everyone. The content should also be sufficient for the audience to be engaged for about 2 minutes, at least. Please get the boys ready. We will have another round of show and tell tomorrow. I will pass the feedback once all are done with the show and tell.

2) Please sign the spelling booklet. I have also explained the meaning of the words for next week's spelling. We have also gone through the word royal (spelling) in more detail. I showed the boys who the royal family of England comprises of (Prince William, Kate Middleton, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prince Harry). The words related to Royal should also be familiar to them. This can tie in nicely with April 29th being the anniversary of the youngest Royal couple (William and Kate) and also hopefully it will help them understand when the second baby of the couple arrive soon.

3) We have completed the topic of Shapes and Patterns. I have returned both the unit booklet and the test paper as well. I have gone through the worksheets in detail. Please sign and return to me tomorrow.

4) We read a new book 'The Hungry Giant's Shoes' today. We had an interesting time comparing the similarities and differences between 'The Hungry Giant' and 'The Hungry Giant's Shoes'

Thanks and have a great week ahead!

Updates on 24th April 2015

Hi Parents,

1) I have completed two Readers' Theatre scripts with the boys (The Hungry Giant, Crocodile Tea). It is fun to read along with the boys. You may want to read it with him in your spare time. It helps with weak readers as well. Hope you have fun! Please do keep the paper safe as it needs to be filed in their English File.

2) The Show and Tell will start on Monday. Kindly ensure they are ready with their items and have practised enough at home in front of a few people. Hopefully, they will be confident to speak in front of the class. I hope the Chinese Show and Tell session was a good learning experience for them and will contribute to help them in this assessment.

3) There will be a Sound Discrimination test on Wednesday next week. We had practised once before in Term 1. Please do look at the Oral Booster book as well as there have been Listening Comprehension tests done in it before. There is a section on sound discrimination in it too.

4) Spelling test will be on Monday. We have already discussed the words with the boys. Please do test him on the meaning as well when they are learning to spell.

5) Mathemaniac Card is given out to the boys. Kindly prepare the items and pass it to me after the June Holidays. The card is quite interesting as it incorporates all the topics that the boys have learnt for Maths thus far. Appreciate if you can pass all the items in a file so that it is easier to keep track and display in class later on. I will remind you on a later date about the submission.

6) Mr Philip has requested that all parents should be encouraged to sign up for Dare to Play 2 event. Please go to the school website to look at the instructions for signing up.

7) We started with our Outdoor Education lessons for PAL today. Pupils have been briefed on what the lessons are going to cover. We learnt about the things required for an outdoor hiking trip, what to look out for during the trip, animals that they might encounter during the hike. I'm sure you can have a conversation about this lesson with them. They were really excited during the PAL session.

8) We are done with the Reading Test and most of them did very well for it. I will return the Assessment papers once all the English assessments are over.

Thanks and have a blessed weekend!

Updates and important information about Assessments

Hi Parents,

Please bear with me as this is going to be a long update.

1) Firstly, some updates about the progress of Maths lessons in class. We have completed Addition and Subtraction within 20, and moved on to Shapes and Patterns. I have given them the worksheet on shapes and patterns for them to complete at home as it involves some cutting and pasting. Kindly revise with him the main concepts as they are completing the worksheet. I will collect the worksheet tomorrow. I have also gone through the previous test paper (Test 8) with them. Please sign and go through this topic with them. There will be a test on 14 May 2015, which will test on the topics learnt in Term 1 and 2.

2) Secondly, some updates on English. We have completed the unit of 'The Hungry Giant'. I have sent the unit worksheet back for signature. Please look through it and sign. We have started on the next book 'Crocodile Tea'.

3) There will be a Reading Assessment on Friday this week. Please use 'The Hungry Giant' worksheet, Oral Booster, and the Readers' Theatre scripts that they bring back to practise, if you feel necessary. We have done a lot of reading and practise in class for this test. It will be similar to the previous reading test that I had conducted last term.

4) Show and Tell Practise session will start next Monday to Wednesday. I have gone through the requirements of Show and Tell with the pupils earlier today. They should be showing you the worksheet. Boys will practise their script in front of their classmates and I will provide written feedback, along with the rubrics for you to take a look. Please ensure they are ready and bring their items with them next week. The actual Show and Tell Assessment is the following week, so please use the feedback and help your son with the actual assessment.

5) Kindly be informed that Mrs Denise Wang will be taking charge of the lessons when I am not in school (On course, other duties). She is a roving teacher to support the P1 teachers who are not around since they are in the formative years. She works close with the teachers to support the teaching and learning in class. I have parents, misrepresenting that I am on medical leave when I was away on course, which I had informed the boys before I went. Please do not worry as their learning in class is not jeopardized. If you have clarifications, please send me an email. Kindly do not speculate and pass the wrong information around. Appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 12 and 13th February 2015

Hi Parents,

Please be informed that school ends at 10am on Wednesday, Chinese New Year Eve. Please make necessary arrangements to pick your son up. A letter for Chinese New Year Celebrations has been given to your son.

Maths Unit 3 Addition within 10 paper has been given back to him. Please sign and ensure he completes all corrections. Please revise the chapter with him. We will be starting on the next topic next week.

Spelling on Monday will be Week 7 words. I have gone through the words with him.

We have started the Big book "Walking through the jungle." We will be focusing on the usage of 'a' and 'an', usage of prepositions (over, above, under etc.) once we come back from the weekend.

I have completed the two Holistic assessment components (Spelling and Sound discrimination) this week. Most have done very well in these two tests. I will send the HA components back once all other classes have also completed their testing.

Moving forth, I would appreciate if you train your son to be more organised, such as cleaning up his mess after play, keeping his things neatly after some paper work. Some are still quite messy and they tend to lose their papers quite easily along the way due to being disorganised. Hope my reminders in class helps them too.

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 2nd February 2015

Hi Parents,

I am sorry I was not in school for three days last week. I was down with a bout of gastric flu, vomiting and diarrhea. I was not in a position to come to school and was told to rest well before coming back.

There are few updates. We had our class photo taking session today. There will be a photo taking session tomorrow for the pupils' EZLink student pass. Please ensure he comes to school well dressed, with his tie on, as expected on other days.

I have marked and returned the spelling booklet. Please sign on Week 5 spelling. Please ensure he has completed his corrections. I will collect the spelling booklet tomorrow.

Some of the boys have not submitted the English and the Maths files. Please return to me if you are still holding on to any.

The Holistic Assessment letter has been given out. This letter is important. Please read carefully, know more about the assessments that we will be conducting the entire year for the boys.
I have also stapled a small letter in their diary, regarding next week's spelling assessment.

The first assessment will be a spelling test next week. They will be tested on a few words from Week 3 to 5. Please revise the words with them.

We did sequencing of stories today. We also learnt how and where to use Capital letters. We also started on a new topic Addition within 10 for Mathematics.

Thanks and have a great week ahead.

Regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 27th January 2015

Hi Parents,

We have started on Number Bonds today. It is relatively a short topic so we will be covering it within a week. Please be reminded that the Maths Pupils' Book should be with them at all times. Some of the boys did not have the books with them so it was little difficult to conduct the lesson. Kindly help me to check he has the book with him.

Please also allow them to bring the mini-whiteboard to school. He should have a small duster and 2 working whiteboard markers with him. He can leave it under the desk in school.

I have returned the spelling booklet to him today. I have attached fasteners to the spelling booklet to keep it intact. Kindly sign on the latest spelling test and guide him to finish his corrections.

Lastly, please update me on any medical conditions that your son might have. This includes food allergies as we will be having some activities in class that involves food. Please drop me an email regarding this. I will acknowledge it once I receive.

Thanks a lot and have a good day!

Regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 26th January 2015

Hi Parents,

We went through the Maths test paper today. Please help to sign the test paper and return it tomorrow. I have also returned the Stellar booklet (The Farm Concert). Kindly ensure all corrections have been done and sign the front page of the booklet. You can also take a look at the content being covered in the first unit and revise with him. I will collect the booklet tomorrow.

I have given them SBA homework. They have to cut and paste Mrs Wishy-Washy into the SBA book. We have also done the writing in the book. Please submit the book on Wednesday.

I will like to request the pupils to bring along two highlighters (yellow and green) to do annotation in his work. Please do not give dark coloured highlighters as the ink tends to seep through and stain the other pages.

Please practice logging into MCOnline using the BC number and password. A letter for this was given out last Thursday. I would greatly appreciate if you could write his BC number and password into his diary. I have stapled the login card on the first page of the diary.

Thanks and have a beautiful week ahead!

Regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra

Updates 23rd January 2015

Hi Parents!

We have come to the end of Week 3 of Term 1. The boys have been adapting well to the new environment and peers. We have started our lessons proper and have been completed one unit of English (The Farm Concert) and one chapter of Maths (Numbers to 10).

We have also started on the second unit for English (Mrs Wishy-Washy). We did our reading of the book today in class. It was quite an interesting book. The boys enjoyed it. You can request him to narrate the story to you, to improve his oracy skills.

I will be starting on Chapter 2: Number Bonds next week. They have taken Test 1 yesterday. I will pass the paper to them on Monday to go through the paper and to clarify common misconceptions. Since this is the first test that they have ever done without guidance from me, I request you to be understanding if they have not done up to your expectation. They still need some time to be able to do well in their tests. I will certainly raise some misconceptions during the review of the paper.

There will also be a spelling test on Monday. I have gone through the words with them in class. I hope you can help him to memorise the spelling.

I sincerely appreciate the efforts that you have been taking for your son's smooth transition into primary school. Thanks for your understanding and support.

Thanks and regards,
Mrs Priya Chopra
